Mercury Rising
The inland ice in the Arctic feels remote, untouched, and far from industry and smoke. Yet high levels of toxic mercury are found here. Carried by winds high above the planet and driven by ocean currents below, mercury travels across borders and continents before settling in fragile Arctic ecosystems.
Once there, it enters water, wildlife, and food chains gradually building up in animals and the people who depend on them. This is the hidden journey of a pollutant that connects the Arctic to the rest of the world.
